Memory Backup Super Capacitor to Repair Nortel Norstar MICS CICS M8X24 and other KSUs. If your system loses its programming when AC Power has been interrupted, a faulty Super Capacitor is most likely the problem. The call comes in, usually on a Monday morning, that the customer’s phones are either partially or entirely non-functional (the power companies often to do the work that interrupts service on weekends). You determine that the system has lost its programming because power has been interrupted. Your first impulse is to reprogram the system–but wait! Why did the power interruption make the system lose the programming? Because the Memory Backup Super Capacitor has failed. If the part is not replaced, the programming will be lost the next time power is interrupted. The system should hold the program for at least 3 days without external power. I take tools and a spare super capacitor to the customer’s site and do the repair on the spot. It takes me about 15 minutes, then I re-program the system. The parts can be replaced by a person with limited soldering skills. A soldering iron, solder wick and solder are needed to replace the parts. Use standard safety precautions (wear safety glasses, unplug the unit before soldering, etc) when working on the KSU. When you’re done soldering, always wash your hands because solder contains lead. Please note that replacing the super capacitor will fix the problem only if the capacitor was the problem to start with! 8 in diameter and.
